Reducing strain – preventing tension
Welding can impact on health, which is why there is a series of statutory prevention regulations governing released gases and vapours, extreme light and high temperatures. These include the use of extractor systems, mobile extractor devices, fume extraction torches and personal protective equipment. As a leading welding equipment partner, ABICOR BINZEL wants to help welders to reduce the physical stress associated with welding.
Welding equipment for working in constrained positions
Welders that work in constrained positions for longer periods can suffer permanent tension in individual muscle groups; the most common symptoms include pain in the back, muscles and joints. To prevent this, ABICOR BINZEL consistently develops its torches based on ergonomic principles to make them even more user-friendly. One particular point of focus is on reducing the weight of welding torches and cable assemblies. This relieves strain on the shoulders and arm muscles. Also, ABICOR BINZEL torches have replaceable and rotating torch necks to facilitate welding in difficult-to-access areas, to alleviate constrained positions and thereby reduce physical strain. As early as the middle of the 1970s ABICOR BINZEL launched the first fume extraction torch that removes weld smoke directly from the welding point to reduce the level of fume to which the welder is exposed. These special torches have been continuously further developed in terms of ergonomics, handling and extraction performance. The gas-cooled models are equipped with the unique weight-reduced cable assemblies from ABICOR BINZEL.
Prevention through fitness
Despite all the features incorporated into the welding equipment, welding remains a strenuous profession. ABICOR BINZEL contracted the sports medicine division at the Justus-Liebig University in Gießen to examine the physical aspects of welding and, in cooperation with the sports medicine specialists, has come up with a special fitness program for welders, which has been documented in the fitness manual for welders from ABICOR BINZEL. These exercises, which specially cater to the needs of welders, help to strengthen and relax critical muscle groups to improve quality of life and health-related absenteeism. Thanks to the various scientific studies that were conducted within the scope of this joint project, it has been possible to clearly and verifiable prove that weight-reduced cable assemblies from ABICOR BINZEL for gas-cooled torches significantly reduce the strain on muscles during welding. They help to ensure relaxed working, better work results and a higher level of satisfaction among the welders.
